What’s your favourite form of social media for blogs?

best social media for blogging

Social media is undeniably the perfect partner to blogging. Where your blog is the heart of your work, social media is the big brains, spouting nonsense, interesting titbits, cute pictures, videos and anything else you can think of. I love social media for its randomness, where you can take a 60 second peek and find a hilarious gif, a quiz on how well you know Sabrina the Teenage Witch (VERY well it turns out and here’s the link), stick up pretty photos of random loveliness you spy around the place or just throw a question out into the ether or help answer someone else’s. Yes of course there are idiots on every form of social media but I choose to ignore them as much as I can and therefore that’s the only mention they’re going to get in this post. Today is about what social media we love, for what it brings to blogging, what drives the most traffic and most importantly, what’s the most fun for you and for interacting with your audience.

For me, I don’t branch out on to every form of social media because I’m not willing to sink the time into it, but my absolute favourite is Instagram. Twitter is fantastic and the best resource for chatting, keeping up to date with news and interacting with random people, but I love Instagram the most at the moment. I like that it’s as much about a picture as the words in its caption, that it can inspire lust or laughter in an instant with new makeup or a random meme and that it manages to inspire comments and conversation similar to a blog. For me, I think I like it because each Insta post is like a mini blog post with a pretty picture and a random outburst of conversation and anyone can get involved.

Traffic wise, I get the most followers daily to my Instagram account but I have a fantastic number of followers on Twitter that ticks away nicely and considering I’m only on Facebook a month or two, it’s doing really well. I think I find Facebook a bit more desolate as it’s a page and I don’t know how to see anyone else’s updates through that account so it’s just me posting out into the emptiness and seeing what comes back. Twitter is a constant hum of conversation and where my biggest audience is and I’d never be without it for the blog, the only problem is that you need to have your timing right as it’s a case of when your followers are on the same time as you’re posting or else it gets lost pretty quickly in a stream of tweets. I know Snapchat is the newest craze and seems an incredible tool for a lot of bloggers, particularly here in Ireland at the moment, but it’s just not my thing unless I’m showing makeup and not featuring in it myself which would probably get pretty boring! I did download it for a day but I just felt a bit lost with it but I’ll never say never, this time next year I may have Snapchat and my own YouTube channel and love it so you never know!

So enough from me, I’d love to hear as bloggers, what are your favourite forms of social media for growing your blog and your audience and for readers, what forms do you find the best for following and getting to know your favourite bloggers better?

So readers/bloggers, what’s the best platform when it comes to a blog and their social media accounts?

  • I refuse to download newer social media platforms like Snapchat and Periscope because I think you can spread yourself too thin and I don’t want to spend my entire life on social media (who am I kidding I already do). I like Instagram but find it so frustrating. I don’t post for a few days and start losing followers. But then I posted the other day and lost like four followers. I don’t know how to please them! I had Facebook but deleted it as it had very few likes and I believe even if you have a lot of followers not all of them see what you post unless you pay for ads, which is ridiculous. My favourites are Pinterest and Twitter. Although Twitter recently I’ve completely flat lined with followers. I know it’s not about followers but it’s frustrating. I hit 1200 followers 4 times! x

Instagram and Twitter, hands down! Facebook is dead, in my opinion. Twitter is the best for traffic and meeting other bloggers. Whereas Instagram is fabulous for Inspiration and keeping in touch with other bloggers and what they’re up to! Thanks for the Sabrina quiz link! I got 14/15 #MitosisIs… 😉

  • Instagram is an inspiration every day, and I’m very picky about the people I follow because I only want to see pretty pictures, no spam.

On Twitter I follow a lot more people – and have more followers too, and I use it more as a tool to network and spread the word about my new blog posts.

So you could say that I’m more personal on Instagram, while my usage of Twitter is really blog-oriented.

    • I’d be the same! That’s a good way of thinking of it, Twitter is definitely a huge tool for blogging!

  • Love Instagram the most, discovered so many blogs that way.

    • Me too, ones I genuinely never probably would have discovered otherwise!

  • I love to use instagram and facebook to hype my blog.

In this way, my followers can know my updates even there not on my website

  • I’ve never been great with social media but I am trying so hard these days to be consistent. My fave is also Instagram but I don’t think it drives much traffic to my blog. I want to be more active on Twitter but it’s so hard with a toddler that constantly needs my attention haha x

    • I agree it doesn’t drive as much traffic as you would think but often if I see something I like I don’t click through to the person’s blog on Instagram anyway I go into the browser first!

  • I’ll always have a soft spot for Twitter (blogging aside, I met my husband through it!) and it’s the social media platform that brings me the most hits, but I’m loving Instagram more and more lately. I’m also more likely to follow newly discovered (by me) bloggers on Instagram than I am on Twitter.

I’ve only had the blog Facebook page up and running a few months, but it’s definitely much harder work and I need to dedicate more time to it.

    • Ah that’s so cute! Twitter would bring me the most hits too but I’ve found it a bit quiet lately, I think it’s so easy to miss things on Twitter as it’s so busy whereas I find Instagram a bit more manageable! Yep I’m the same with Facebook and I genuinely don’t know what I’m doing with it most of the time, I don’t know how to see other people’s updates through my fan page or whether I need to start a separate account for that?

      • It took me a while to figure out how to follow other pages from my blog page. It’s under “View Pages Feed”, which should be on the left side when you’re looking at your own timeline (just below your post reach number) and then it’s “Like Other Pages”. They don’t exactly make it easy to find.

Instagram has brought me to more blogs thank any other… I love it xx

    • Me too Siobhan I love the visual aspect of beauty and blogging so it really works for me!

  • I don’t use Facebook too much but agree Instagram is the best and there are some great accounts out there x

    franklyflawless.com

    • There’s so many fantastic accounts it’s easy to miss them!

  • It’s gotta be Instagram – love, love, love it! The rest I can take it or leave it to be honest. Wouldn’t be sorry to see most social media platforms go the way of Bebo and MySpace.. remember those??!

    • Ha yeah you wonder what will still be popular in 5 years time! I think Instagram will work regardless but it’s so hard to know!

  • Grace Ziegfeldgirl

i don’t have any social media accounts especially for my blog, but instagram and twitter are both my favourites for interacting with other bloggers

  • i am on Instagram and Twitter, but I don’t get much blog traffic through either of them. They are mostly a way to stay up to date with others and chat the day away.

Pinterest is a great source of inspiration, but I don’t really use it to direct traffic to my blog if I am honest.

    • I started Pinterest but do literally nothing with it, some bloggers are great with it but I don’t have the time or the inclination!

      • Pinterest is really time consuming! If you really wanted to use it properly, you´d spend hours on there! Ain´t nobody got time for that.

  • Instagram and Twitter for me! Both are the best for meeting like minded bloggers!

  • I’m with you on loving Instagram, Twitter is also good but I haven’t even made Facebook page for my blog and I’m only now getting hang of Pinterest 🙂 I haven’t even downloaded Snapchat, lol! x

    Mummy’s Beauty Corner

    • I think Twitter and Instagram really suit how I like to use social media and Facebook is grand but I only started it recently and it certainly isn’t as fun as the other two!

  • Claire Kane

I love them all equally for different reasons (apart from snapchat- hate it) Twitter is great as a blogger for interacting, I get most of my traffic from Facebook and I love it as a reader too, Instagram and pinterest great for scrolling through and finding new blogs to read as well.

    • Why do you hate Snapchat out of interest? I couldn’t make head nor tail of it but I didn’t give it much of a chance!

  • I love scrolling through Instagram! It’s definitely be favourite! xx
