The Stupidly Expensive Glow Spray

tatcha luminous dewy skin spray review tatcha beauty papers

I know I’m not the only one. You know when you just get your heart and hopes set on one product and can’t rest until it’s in your clammy hands? Well that’s what happened with this Tatcha spray because I apparently have as much self-control as a five year old left with a box of open sweets. This is one of those hard to get products that makes it infinitely more desirable than even the most beautiful regular product. It’s hard to get, ridiculously expensive (€60 in the end) and has reviews which either dub it the elixir of the gods or a bit of a disappointment. Ah Yav, you should have known better.

In my defense, I’m obsessed, genuinely 100% bona fide obsessed, with getting natural glowing skin but I always like decent coverage with it so it’s a tricky balancing act. That terrible need in me plus the fact the wedding has become my go to excuse in my head to buy every makeup product known to man means I didn’t even have a choice in this, I had to buy the Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Spray. Jaclyn Hill loves it, Irish blogger Orla of Makeupovermind loves it and I’m simply too weak-willed to resist because both girls always look amazing.

I hated paying this much for a product and I hated it even more when I finally tried it. I was hoping to hear angels singing and not recognise the glorious sheen off my own skin but all I heard in my head was ‘meh’. A €60 ‘meh’. I don’t know what I was expecting but I guess it was too much in the end. It does give your face a soft glow but my combo of highlighters plus a spritz of All Nighter at the end has a very similar effect. Now all of those add up to more than this costs, but the highlighters will last a few years and All Nighter makes a big difference in the longevity of my makeup. This isn’t bad, it just translates very subtly to my skin and if I overload it I think it highlights unevenness in my skin in a way I’m not crazy on. In short, for very even skin that runs quite dry, it would be lovely but for me I can get a much nicer effect with products I already own. I totally trust the girls who love it so it’s simply a case of it just not suiting me. And frankly, that’s almost a relief as I can’t afford a new habit this expensive anyway.

But as you can see, it wasn’t my only Tatcha purchase. I picked up these Beauty Papers in Space NK as the sole Tatcha product they stock. I did a little research and they were meant to be excellent at absorbing oil without disturbing your makeup. I get oily around my t-zone but my skin doesn’t take kindly to reapply on top of a base late in the day so these were purchased on a wing and a prayer. Well I was due some luck and I found it here, these are great. They absorb oil exceptionally well and leave your skin looking matte and undisturbed. If you rubbed them, it’s like anything else, your base will move, but if you gently press them on your skin it’s only the oil that’s taken away. These are €14.50 which is admittedly a big price for 20 sheets but I save these for when I need them and I never use a full sheet. Eking them out this way means I’ll get longer but any way you look at it, these won’t last as long as you want them to. Still, if a little oily patch drives you mad, these are perfect for the job and can slip into the tiniest of bags with ease. I’ll be keeping a stack of these for the wedding and the entire summer in general because they’re that good, but I promise to try some cheaper alternatives down the road to keep you updated.

So girls, have you ever wanted an expensive product really badly for ages and then was bitterly disappointed when you finally got it?

    • I know Gemma, I bought it off Depop and nearly had a Sean Connery with the price!

  • Kiki Rampone

This is so disappointing, I wish it had worked better for you! Too bad it was so expensive :/ Great review though!

Can you drop me an email with the price please? Xx

  • Ooh I’ve seen this everywhere too.. I still would like to try other products from the range if they ever bring it fully to Ireland x

    • Me too to be honest, especially if the price ends up a little more reasonable!

  • Ah, too bad this was a let down for you! I have the mist and am properly obsessed with it- I use a lot of powder on my oily skin and the mist works wonders to bring some glow back afterwards. I also have the blotting papers and agree that they’re top notch too 🙂

    • Ah glad you love the blotting papers and delighted the spray is kinder to you than it is to me:)

  • This Tatcha spray is one of those products I keep saying my favorutie beauty gurus praise and I have been thinking about it also, but just couldn’t justify the price. I’m glad I didn’t to be honest after reading your review x

    Beauty with charm

    • Loads of people absolutely adore it so I may be the odd one out!!

  • It looks gorgeous, the packaging is beautiful and the idea behind it is great, I’m sorry it didn’t wow you! Very annoying to spend that money and be disappointed, the blotting papers look great though, I’m always looking out for good ones, they’re so handy!

Oh and once again, it was so lovely to finally meet you (and Oscar) in person!

    Emma x

    • Ah was lovely to meet you too Emma, excuse the fact I looked like Casper as I’d tried on a foundation for the first time that was way too pale and awful but didn’t have time to redo it!:)

  • Jinger Kat

    thanks for the honest review

  • Oh but a bride to be has to do what a bride to be has to do!
I hear you on the self control of a toddler here. I am in a formal no beauty buy ban since the beginning of the year. And I’m suffering a lot! XD

    • I need to add a “self imposed” no buy ban, nobody is making me do it.

      • Yeah I’m the same, I don’t think I’m able to stop at the moment!

  • thepharmersjournal

Oh how annoying… I’ve been eyeing this up for a while after reading glowing reviews. Trying so hard to spend less at the mo though – You’ve just made my mind up!

    • Well loads of people adore it, I may be in the minority!

  • Ann-Marie Callaghan

To be honest, your make up looked better in the before pic! But nice to see someone being upfront on honest in a review.

  • It’s such a shame that you don’t love it, especially as you paid €60!!! For me, it works wonders and the U.D. setting spray doesn’t come close – but I have very dry skin. For me, it softens everything & works like a filter and I’m obsessed!! xx

    Beautylymin

    • That’s mad! I’m delighted you love it, wish it worked like that for me!
