I love Christmas. There I said it. Now I completely agree it starts at least a month and a half too early but now that December is has arrived I’ve kinda lost the run of myself and festive cheer is in full swing. So with that brings around the all important present list and that’s where I kind of come into my own. I officially love buying goodies for people come Christmas.
I’ve definitely picked up my mam’s habit of making endless lists, especially around this time, and every year I always have a well worn notebook with pages of secretive scrawls of ideas for people and all important sums for what funds I have and how much I’ll have to spend in the run up to Christmas. The lists are re-written, presents are ticked off the list or changed altogether and I get a huge amount of enjoyment pouring over it like it’s a very important document. I also really enjoy spending evenings looking up cute ideas for people I love and thinking about how much they’ll enjoy something on Christmas morning. It’s all part of the fun for me and I definitely get a huge buzz out of Christmas shopping whether it’s online or running around the city.
But present shopping is stressful too so I can understand in a way why a lot of people ignore it and then run out and get everything in one day. I know one of my worst habits is adding extra bits onto people’s presents because I can’t leave well alone and I always overspend because I genuinely love buying gifts for people I love and I tend to go over the top. And don’t start me on the crowds in town come December. I feel too warm, claustrophobic and pushed around when things get too hectic close to Christmas, hence me trying to get everything finished ASAP and relying on online shopping a lot! Then there’s the biggest factor for most people including ourselves, money. We’ve been much more careful about buying presents this year, everything is smaller but hopefully equally lovely as the last thing we’re willing to do is bankrupt ourselves for January to get through December! But honestly I turn white when I see a Furby costs nearly €60 and perfume sets are topping €100.
So yes Christmas time zaps your funds and can be stressful, but it can also be huge fun and a lovely time of year to spread the love.
So how about you, do you love Christmas shopping or is it one more hassle you’d happily ignore and do you feel pressure when you add up how much you have to spend?
