The Best Beauty Products of 2016

Would you believe it, it’s the last post of the year! I hope your 2016 had some fabulous days and nights and that you have a lovely Christmas lined up. If it wasn’t the best of years, you have a lovely clean notebook of 365 days coming up around the corner. So to end things on the blog, the only way to do it in style is to talk about my favourite products of 2016 but, just in case you’re sick of me yakking at this stage of the year, I’ve enlisted the help of 7 other fabulous Irish bloggers to yak alongside me and fill you in on their top 10 beauty products of 2016.

I’m hoping you are reading this curled up in a nice cosy room with the telly on in the background and the Christmas tree twinkling but wherever you are – busy bus, toilet (not judging) or taking a sneaky break in work, here’s a whole host of products that have been given the seal of approval by some of the best Irish beauty bloggers out there. If we manage to enable you to treat yo’ self before Christmas comes, sure there’s no harm in that either. This is also a good post to bookmark as there is A LOT of info in it.

First let’s meet the panel of bloggers! They are (in no particular order as they’re all great) – Dani from The Rebel Lipstick, Becca from The Beauty Inbox, Lorraine from John it’s Only Makeup, Sinead from The Beautiful Truth, Sharon from Behind Green Eyes, Gemma from The Beauty Nook and Emma from Ol’ Green Eyes.

My picks

Skin79 Pink BB Cream // You may be like ‘Jesus Yav will you stop bloody mentioning this year after year’ but this is my ace of base (gotta get a 90’s reference in before the year ends) and manages to see me through every season in style. It gets another mention here because I spent months and months searching for the perfect bridal foundation in the run up to the wedding, trying samples from pretty much every top brand and after all that time neglecting this, when I put this on again I realised I’d just lost the run of myself and had the perfect product the whole time. It’s perfect for difficult skin like mine and possibly magic because people compliment me on my skin not realising this is the glue that holds up the dry bits, the oily bits and the array of pores into something quite acceptable. Buy online here

Laura Mercier Matte Baked Radiance Powder // Another product I’m addicted to that isn’t new but may be new to you. I’m obsessed with glowing skin but find most highlighters too strong and obvious on. This is like magic, it looks like soft glowing skin and works wonderfully with my pale tone. Again, I wore it on my wedding day and I wear it every single day so trust me when I say it’s a cracker. Buy online here

Too Faced Born This Way Concealer // I’ve tried three deadly concealers this year, the MUFE HD, MAC Pro Longwear and this, the Too Faced Born This Way Concealer. Pro Longwear is a revelation on the face but out of the three, this wins for creasing the least on me. Finding a good undereye concealer is a pain in the arse and this one has exceeded my expectations, giving a light-medium brightening coverage that’s really flattering. Buy online here

Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics // I forever mix up the name of this palette but it’s a total beauty and the one I’ve been reaching for the most since I bought it in October. I always thought of mattes as slightly less flattering but this totally changed my mind. Think of the softest most foolproof mattes imaginable and you’re in the right ballpark. Buy online here

Hylamide HA Blur // If you’re a primer addict like myself, you need to try this. This is incredible for giving a smooth, poreless effect and even helps stop concealer creasing under my eyes. You need to go relatively lightly with this or it has a tendency to ball, but it’s such a good primer, you need to try it at least once. Buy online here

Hylamide HA Serum // I’ll have a full review of some of the Hylamide range in January but I’m about to start my second bottle of this and I’m hooked. It gives great plumping hydration to my skin but dries down incredibly fast. Fuss free, a great price and seems to have even made my big pores look better. Buy online here

MAC Studio Fix Perfecting Powder // This has been my favourite new powder this year. I figured it would be heavy and obvious looking but it’s actually beautiful on, giving a soft perfecting touch that’s satin soft and long lasting. A little oil will come through eventually during summer days but in Winter it’s golden. Either way, it’s one to try. Buy online here

Dyson Supersonic // I kind of hate adding this as the price is so ridiculous but it’s been one of my favourite products of this year so I have to be honest. Dyson managed to completely reimagine the hairdryer and blew me away with a beautifully designed dryer that’s lightweight and extremely powerful. The price is enough to make me throw up in my mouth a little, but everything else about this is pretty much perfect. Buy online here

MAC Brow Sculpt// Another product I’m really loving from MAC this year. This little crayon gives soft brows in an instant in a great shade range with a nice little spooly on one end to keep things looking natural. Buy online here

Urban Decay All Nighter Spray // It’s another year of love for the spray I can’t live without. Every season it magically helps keep my makeup intact and if you’ve yet to try this invisible wonder, give it a go with the travel size version. Buy online here

Sinéad from The Beautiful Truth

Lancome Teint Idole Cushion foundation // This is one of my favourite finds this year and it has possibly wormed its way into a hit position in my all time top 10 foundations. It is so light weight on the skin, gives high coverage and doesn’t look heavy or cakey. The only downside is there just isn’t enough product. Buy online here

Too Face Born This way concealer // This is an incredibly creamy, light weight and yet high coverage concealer. Great for covering dark circles but also brightening up the under eye area. Buy online here

Cocoa Brown Shampoo and Conditioner // While these are two separate products, they work so well together to give you squeaky clean, silky shiny hair. Buy online here

Laura Gellar Gilded Honey Highlighter // Totally worth the hype!!!! Buy online here

Hylamide HA blur // Honestly the best primer I’ve ever used. It literally glues your makeup to your face, while at the same time it evens out your skin for a flawless canvas. Buy online here

Blank Canvas Master series one palette // This palette is incredible. Warm tones, mostly matte and a dream to work with. Buy online here

MooGoo irritable skin balm // If you suffer from itchy skin or skin, that is prone to allergic reactions or eczema, this is a must for your collection. It worked a dream on my legs while I was pregnant. Buy online here

Push Makeup Rudy Nudy // This is a cream eyeshadow base, that keeps your eyeshadow from wearing away, creasing or just looking yucky. It is so creamy and goes on so easily. It might be a little tub, but it lasts ages!! Buy online here

Loreal steampod // This is the most incredible hair tool. It not only straightens your hair in no time but it causes less damage to your hair and your hair stays straight until you wash it next!!! Buy online here

Image skincare // I can’t pick just one product, all I can say is go get a consultation and get the right products picked for your skin because since I had a consultation with the skin nerd and implemented her regime my skin has never looked so good!! Buy online here

Dani from The Rebel Lipstick

Urban Decay All Nighter Foundation // Long lasting full coverage foundation that isn’t heavy – my dream come true! Buy online here

Lime Crime Velvetines // Liquid lipsticks were the biggest makeup trend this year but these stood out as my firm favourites as they were comfortable to wear and long-lasting without drying my lips out! Buy online here

Sleek Solstice Highlighting Palette // To hop on another trendy bandwagon, I was all about highlighting this year and this highlighting quad delivered extreme shine at a small price! Buy online here

Essence Mascaras // Every Essence mascara I’ve tried this year has given me the dramatic false lash look I love for a bargain price.

Kat Von D Shade & Light Palette // Now available at Debenhams, this palette has made bringing some shape to my moon face a breeze! Buy online here

Urban Decay Naked Skin Concealer // I’ve switched up between this and similar concealers from pharmacy brands all year but I always go back to this one. Creamy, blendable, full coverage that lasts! Buy online here

Make Up Geek Eyeshadows // I’ve filled a full palette with these budget friendly eyeshadows and their quality and stunning shade range rivals that of much bigger (and more expensive) brands. Buy online here

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder – Ethereal Light // A lit-from-within glow that works on pale skin! I’ve never had so many compliments on my complexion! Buy online here

Mac Strobe Cream // This cult favourite is infamous for a reason. It adds a beautiful luminosity to the skin and can be used in several different ways! Buy online here

Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics Palette // All matte neutrals with a stunning burnt orange and a lush aubergine purple. This is my perfect Naked palette. Buy online here

Emma from Ol’ Green Eyes

Zoeva 102 Silk Finish brush // I use this brush almost every day. It is so soft on my skin and it blends any foundation I’ve used with it easily. It’s amazing quality for the price of only €14.50 and it’s completely vegan. Buy online here

Soap and Glory Archery Brow Pencil // I’ve repurchased this countless times over the past couple of years. It’s got a spooly brush on one end and a small crayon on the other. I love how the size of the pencil gives me precision but it’s also soft enough to blend out and get natural looking brows depending on how heavy-handed you are with it. At only €11, it’s definitely worth trying out if you’re in the market for a new brow pencil. Buy online here

Lancôme Miracle Air de Teint Foundation // I discovered this foundation early this year after buying it on a whim and it quickly became one of my favourite foundations. I was sold on it after reading the box which describes it as a “perfecting fluid matte glow creator”. It’s lightweight, blends easily and makes my skin look even and glowing with a light to medium coverage. It contains a powder that’s 25 times lighter than your average foundation so it’s perfect for combination/oily skin. Buy online here

Armani Lip Magnet // I’m a lipstick fanatic so it was very difficult to mention only one lip product in my top ten list. I had to include the Armani Lip Magnets because they’re such an innovative lip product like nothing else I’ve ever tried before. The shade I have is Vibrato and it’s the most stunning deep red. I love everything about these from the formula, applicator and packaging to the scent and shade range. The lasting power is excellent too. They are completely worth their high-end price point. Buy online here

Bourjois Liner Pinceau Liquid Eyeliner // This is the best eyeliner I’ve tried in a long time. I’ve tried so many liquid liners over the years while trying to perfect the cat-eye and I’ve finally found a budget option that works really well for me. I love it because it has a very fine, flexible brush that makes it easy for me to achieve a sharp line and it lasts all day without smudging or fading. This is one I will definitely be repurchasing. Buy online here

Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics palette // It was a close call between this and the Gwen Stefani palette, but the Ultimate Basics won out because for me it has more versatility. I’ve become a convert to matte eyeshadows over the past year and I just think this palette has no filler shades, every single one I’ve used and loved which doesn’t always happen with a palette. I think it’s the one Naked palette that everyone would love and use every day because the range of shades is perfect. Buy online here

Pixi Glow Tonic // I had been meaning to try this for years and after finally getting around to it earlier this year I’m completely addicted, so much so that I have a back up so I don’t run out. It contains Glycolic Acid so it’s great for brightening my skin by reducing excess oil and unblocking pores. I’ve seen such a difference I don’t think I would ever go back to a manual exfoliator. If you want to try it out but aren’t sure if it will suit your skin it also comes in a travel size which is what I bought first  to make sure I liked it, after a couple of days of using it I went out and bought the full size and I’ve been using it every single day since. Buy online here

Kiehl’s Clearly Corrective Dark Circle Perfector // This is one of my best discoveries of the past couple of years. It’s a lightweight tinted treatment that contains SPF 30, I use it everyday under concealer. It has done wonders for my dark circles and it’s great for keeping the delicate skin around my eyes protected from the sun. It’s one of my holy grail products that I won’t be without now. Buy online here

Lancôme Sourcils Styler Brow Mascara // I never thought I’d be so excited by a brow mascara, but after trying so many of them I can safely say this is by far the best one I’ve used. The shape of the brush is the key to how good this brow mascara is, the product only gets on your hairs, not your skin. I have a tinted one which is great for days when I don’t have time to do my brows, it also comes in a clear version. Buy online here

Brain Silk-épil 9 // This isn’t the sexiest of beauty products, but I had to include it because it has revolutionised my beauty routine. After shaving for years, I got so tired of the expense of razors and shaving gel and the amount of time it takes. I won’t sugarcoat it, the epilator hurts like hell the first time you use it, but once you get used to it the maintenance is much more convenient and cost effective than shaving or waxing. Someone gave me a great tip if you’re too scared of the pain of epilating everything the first time, get waxed instead and just maintain the regrowth. I wish I had  bought one years ago. I can’t imagine ever shaving again. Buy online here

Gemma from The Beauty Nook

Wet n Wild 1 Step Wonder Gel Nail Polishes // The only nail polishes I have ever used without a top or base coat. They last really well without and have a nice glossy finish. They’re also super cheap! Find stockists here

Colourpop Creme Gel Pencil in Get Paid // I used this in my waterline all the time, until mine ran out very sadly. It is a real flattering rose gold bronze shade. A more subtle, but still defining choice over the usual black or brown.

L’Oréal Infallible 24 Hr Matte Foundation // My ride or die foundation. So far, the best foundation I have used on my oily skin. Texture wise, finish wise and longevity wise. A great all-rounder. Buy online here

Real Techniques Miracle Sculpting Sponge // Shaped really oddly, but is really soft and melts creams and powder products in to the skin really nicely. Buy online here

Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics Palette // I don’t use all of the colours, but I have reached for it every day since I bought it. Buy online here

La Roche Posay Ulta Toleraine Ultra Eye Contour Cream // Thanks to Sinéad for recommending this to me. Works great for dry or sensitive under eyes. I’m on my third bottle! Buy online here

Fairydrops Scandal Queen Mascara Waterproof // Best waterproof mascara I have ever used. Seriously! Buy online here

Nyx Soft Matte Lip Cream in Stockholm // This has been my favourite nude lip colour of 2016. Easy to wear and the matte lip creams are comfortable on the lips too. A great ‘throw into the handbag’ shade. Buy online here

theBalm Put A Lid On It Eyeshadow Primer // Has a light consistency, blends really easily on the eyelids. Makes your eyeshadow last all day. Dare I say, I like it more than UD Primer Potion. Buy online here

Garnier Micellar Oil Infused Cleansing Water // Takes off even waterproof makeup without dragging the skin. I use this as my first cleanse, won’t be for everyone, but my skin really likes it. Buy online here

Becca from The Beauty Inbox

NARS Velvet Skin Tint // I’ve been obsessed this year with the Nars Matte Velvet Skin Tint – it gives light to medium coverage for a flawless, matte finish. Buy online here

St Moriz Velvet Finish Tanning Gel // I’m not the world’s greatest fake tanner but I couldn’t get enough of the new St Moriz Velvet Finish Tanning Gel this summer. Easy, flawless cover without that fake tan smell. Brilliant! Buy online here

Kerastase Discipline Bain Fluidealiste // This wasn’t a new release but I’ve been using Kerastase Discipline Bain Fluidealiste shampoo religiously. It’s sulphate-free and a bit of a revelation for my hair! Buy online here

CND Vinylux // I’m a long-time fan of CND Shellac so I knew I’d adore their weekly polish range, Vinylux. The gel-like polishes actually deliver on the week-long promise and last the pace. Buy online here

Sleek Highlighter Cleopatra’s Kiss // I’m not great at contour but adore a little highlight. The shimmering Sleek Highlighter Palette in Cleopatra’s Kiss is one of my favourite releases of 2016. Buy online here

Armani Lip Magnets // I love a red lip and this year the standout matte lipstick was the Giorgio Armani Lip Magnets. Gorgeous colours and super comfortable to wear. Buy online here

Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics // My most used palette has to be the new Urban Decay Ultimate Neutrals. For a simple, smoky eye, it’s foolproof. Buy online here

La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo Gel // As I have oily skin, the La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo gel for blemishes is a skincare hero of mine. Buy online here

Garnier Ultimate Blends Delicate Oat Body Lotion // I need so much lotion for my dry legs at this time of year and Garnier Ultimate Blends Delicate Oat Body Lotion is so gentle and hydrating. Love! Buy online here

Yon-Ka Nutri Defense // Finally, most nights I can be found slathering myself in Yon-Ka Nutri Defense moisturiser. It’s rich and super hydrating for baby soft skin by morning. Find  stockists here

Sharon from Behind Green Eyes

The Balm Meet Matt Nude Palette // A lot cooler than the Meet Matrimony palette, this has been a staple for me this year. I use the shade Matt Wood for eyebrows, and the shade Matt Singh as an all-over eye colour when I don’t want anything too loud. Buy online here

Bourjois 123 Perfect CC Cream // This has become my go-to base. It conceals redness, it gives medium coverage, and it makes skin look healthy while feeling really light. Love it! Buy online here

Color Wow Root Cover Up Powder // Pricey, but lasts for months and months. This is a mineral powder that clings to grey hair and works to conceal it in between colours, I’ve saved a fortune on hair colour by using this in between dyes. I’ve tried sprays and crayons but always return to this. Buy online here

Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Patina // Doesn’t dry out my lips, doesn’t fade after a few hours, and this is a great neutral shade. Buy online here

Wet n Wild Megaglo Contouring Palette Contour // I’ve hit pan on this – which should be all you need to know! I use the “Dulce de Leche” duo, the lighter of two available shades, and the contour shade is perfect for pale skin. The powder isn’t cakey, it all blends really well, and it’s an absolute bargain. Find stockists here

Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray // I’ve gone through a couple of bottles of this since I discovered it last year and it really does make a difference to the staying power of my makeup. Buy online here

Bourjois Volume 1 Seconde Mascara Ultra Black // No matter what other mascara I try, I always come back to this one. It gives length, volume, and makes lashes really black. Buy online here

Victoria’s Secret Fragrance Mist – Amber Romance // This is a recent discovery for me but I’ve repurchased this scent already – it’s not particularly long lasting, but it’s warm and comforting, and perfect for spraying over a scarf or big cosy jumper. Buy online here

Inglot – Duraline // I’ve used duraline to help bring caked eyebrow pomades back to life, plus as an adhesive to help pigments stay on my eyes. It’s a lovely multi-purpose product. Buy online here

Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser // An old favourite – I’ve used this more than any other cleanser this year. It does the job and it’s really refreshing on my skin. Buy online here

Lorraine from John, it’s only Makeup

Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Lipstick // Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Lipsticks feel so smooth and velvety, worlds away from matte textures of old. There’s a bit of light and glow in the finish, which makes for a plumper, softer look. No other lipstick compares. Buy online here

Too Faced Melted Chocolate Metallic Liquefied Lipsticks // I assumed Too Faced Melted Chocolate Metallic Liquefied Lipsticks would be style over substance, but they’re a joy to use. Obviously, the chocolate scent and flavour is the main draw, but they’re really easy to wear too. Nice wash of colour, a little sparkle and very moisturising. I keep mine in my handbag, it’s so handy to throw on. Buy online here

L’Oreal Volume Million So Couture Mascara // L’Oreal Volume Million So Couture Mascara adds volume, curl and length. It’s water resistant and doesn’t flake. Top quality and performance. Buy online here

Collab Sheer + Invisible Dry Shampoo // Collab Sheer + Invisible Dry Shampoo is undetectable, save for a big boost in volume, texture and freshness. No white coating or weird grimy residue. Love the stuff! Buy online here

It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC Cream SPF50 // It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC Cream SPF50 is such a brilliant base for everyday wear. It’s moisturising, glowy and smooths on with no hassle at all. The SPF is a huge bonus, especially if you’re using an acid in your skin care. Buy online here

Alpha H Liquid Gold // Speaking of! Alpha H Liquid Gold is magic. It gives skin a kick up the butt, getting rid of dead cells in double time and allowing for fresh new skin to shine through. I won’t be without it. Buy online here

L’Oreal Steampod // I’ve got wild hair. It’s really thick and curly too, so styling it can be a pain. I got a L’Oreal Steampod a few weeks ago and it is miles better than any straightener I’d used previously. It used to take me an hour to straighten my hair, now I’m done in twenty minutes. Buy online here

My Beauty Diary Liposome Hyaluronic Masks // I love a sheet mask, and My Beauty Diary Liposome Hyaluronic Masks are my favourite. They’re so cooling and comfortable, great for skin that feels a bit stressed out. Buy online here

MAC Lip Pencils // I’m reluctant to part with my cash when it comes to lip pencils. I think you can get some really nice ones in the chemist. Still, if it’s a colour I know I’ll get lots of wear out of, I go to MAC. The lip pencils are consistently good quality and the texture is perfect – creamy enough to be comfortable and look good, but stiff enough to draw a precise line and last well. Buy online here

Artis Oval 8 brush // My Artis Oval 8 brush is my foolproof  fixer. I don’t really understand the technology behind it, but this big furry toothbrush is ace. It helps foundation settle seamlessly and it’s so fast. Honestly, it takes no more than twenty seconds for a full face. Magic! Buy online here
